About Deterding Law
Tess Deterding is a retired peace officer and attorney in Sacramento, CA. Tess earned her BA from the University of California at Davis before attending the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Academy in 2006.
While working as a Deputy Sheriff, Tess earned her Juris Doctorate from Lincoln Law School and became a member of the California State Bar in 2014. Tess enjoyed a fifteen-year career with the Sheriff’s Office, highlighted by two years as the Public Information Officer where Tess was the liaison between the Sheriff’s Office, the media, and the public. Tess retired as a Sheriff’s Sergeant in 2021.
Tess founded Deterding Law in 2020, a law firm offering efficient and comprehensive wills, trusts and protection of property. Although Tess is passionate about legacy planning and personalized protections for all families, her focus is helping law enforcement families who are stressed out about what may happen to their personal property and finances in the event of an injury, death or lawsuit resulting from an incident in the line of duty. Tess created the Public Safety Planning website to bring comprehensive and efficient estate planning to law enforcement agencies across California at a reasonable price.
